Despite decades of precedent, the reports, which are meant to inform congressional decisions on foreign aid allocations and security assistance, will no longer call governments out for such things as denying freedom of movement and peaceful assembly. They won't condemn retaining political prisoners without due process or restrictions on "free and fair elections.”

Forcibly returning a refugee or asylum-seeker to a home country where they may
face torture or persecution will no longer be highlighted, nor will serious harassment of human rights organizations.

According to an editing memo and other documents obtained by NPR, State
Department employees are directed to “streamline” the reports by stripping them
down to only that which is legally required. The memo says the changes aim to
align the reports with current U.S. policy and "recently issued Executive Orders"
Officially called "Country Reports on Human Rights Practices," the annual
documents are required, by statute, to be a "full and complete report regarding the status of internationally recognized human rights."

President Trump turned up the pressure on Federal Reserve Jerome Powell again on Thursday, saying in a social media post that he should lower interest rates and that Powell’s "termination cannot come fast enough!"

The president's comments posted to Truth Social came one day after Powell said the central bank will "wait for greater clarity" before considering any rate adjustments as he warned Trump’s tariffs would likely generate "higher inflation and slower growth."

Annual real GDP growth is 1.2 percentage points faster during Democratic administrations than Republican ones (3.79% versus 2.60%).

Total job growth has averaged 2.5% annually during Democratic administrations, while it is barely over 1% annually during Republican administrations. Applied to today’s total workforce, this would imply nearly 2.4 million more jobs created every year under Democratic administrations.

The Democratic advantage is even larger in private job growth than it is for total job growth. Notably, business investment is higher during Democratic administrations, with investment growth running at more than double the pace than it does during Republican ones.

Average rates of inflation—both overall and “core” measures that exclude volatile food and energy prices—are slightly lower during Democratic administrations.

Families in the bottom 20% of the income distribution experience 188% faster income growth during Democratic administrations.

In a letter to school district superintendents Friday, the California Department of Education, or CDE, defended the legality of DEI efforts.

"There is nothing in state or federal law ... that outlaws the broad concepts of 'diversity,' 'equity,' or 'inclusion,'" wrote Chief Deputy Supt. David Schapira in the letter to school districts, county education offices and charter schools.

CDE also sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education about the decision not to comply — and said the federal request was vague.

"It is also unclear which specific programs or activities [the federal agency] seeks to regulate by this certification, although the request for certification references 'certain DEI practices' or 'illegal DEI.' It does not define such..."

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, the only woman on NATO's military committee, was fired over the weekend by the Trump administration, U.S. officials said Monday.

Although no reason was given, officials said it was apparently tied to comments she has made that supported diversity in the force.

According to the officials, Chatfield got a call from Adm. Christopher Grady, the acting chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was told the administration wanted to go in a different direction with the job.
