So apparently Walmart uses "ai" now to "detect" theft by trying to correlate self-checkout scans with video that shows items being put in bags.

If that BS believes you didn't scan something and just put it into a bag, it'll block any action until a Walmart empl. unblocks it, after they review the video recording...

Next time i get held up with some false theft alert like that, i'll just leave the full cart right then and there and go elsewhere.

#Eurovision is low-brow pop garbage where viewers consensually participate in propaganda wars against their neighbors.✨Now with music! 🧙‍♂️

I really wish the human race could decide if it wanted to be collectively better mentally & spiritually fit or if we should all go extinct. The anxiety in this liminal space is excruciating.

#Music is #magc y’all. Leave it to the human race to use yet another tool for #enshittification . They can’t help it! #embarrassing

Further steps on my #linuxNewbie journey, courtesy of the #plex #enshittification

Decided to switch my media server to #jellyfin. The installation was no problem but the TV couldn't see the server, so I had to learn about IP addresses and how to open ports on my firewalls (ok not actually Linux related, but still) before it would work.

With that under my belt, I wonder if I could get our mobile devices talking to the wired network. Any pointers would be much appreciated

Oh look! I got another photo of someone else’s mail in my informed delivery email!

At least this time it’s my neighbor’s and not a man who lives in a different town, but maybe this is more invasive.

The last time this happened I didn’t know that man so knowing he went to Elliott Hospital doesn’t do anything for me or hurt him.

But I know this lady, and I’ve also been to this Derm practice and they are awful. So I’m really excited for her to wake up so I can tell her how much they suck.

She’s going to be so freaked out though, this is the second time I knew what she was getting in the mail, the first time it happened I thought it was because they were going to accidentally put it in my mailbox but they didn’t.

I messaged the post office about this but I’m sure it will be just like last time where I bought asked me for a whole bunch of personal information and I will refuse to give it because they clearly don’t know how to handle our personal information.

I don’t know if this counts as enshittification. It should, I signed up for this back in 2018 when I used a PO Box, so for 7 years I have used this and I never saw other people’s mail until the past year or two, now this is the 3rd time it has happened.

And the weird part that I’m sure is purely coincidental is that it’s always medical mail. I never see their junk mail, just medical mail.

#Microsoft finally admit they've lost user emails when an account had an email forward set on #Office365
"More info: New messages will be automatically forwarded, as per user settings with the deployment of the code fix. However, messages users attempted to forward between 2:04 PM UTC on May 11, 2025, and 5:00 AM UTC May 16, 2025, will not be replayed automatically."

WHAT IS THIS WORLD. How can service like this be "normal".

#Meta argues #enshittification isn’t real in bid to toss #FTC #monopoly trial

According to Meta, the FTC failed to show evidence that "the overall quality of Meta’s apps has declined" or that the company shows too many ads to users. Meta says that's "fatal" to the FTC's case that the company wielded monopoly power to pursue more ad revenue while degrading user experience over time (an Internet trend known as "enshittification").

Ars Technica · Meta argues enshittification isn’t real in bid to toss FTC monopoly trialBy Ashley Belanger

Ah, I see #Youtube has decided to finally make itself irrelevant... turns out you can no longer search for profiles / creators, only videos - which of course isn't how any of this works.

Also, at least my very short testing (because neither they nor anyone else pays me to validate their product over time) indicates search results are now nothing but search-optimized clickbait bullshit.

Oh, well, you had a good run, you fucking asshats.

Who Broke the Internet?

Today I'm listening to Who Broke the Internet?, a four-part series by @pluralistic@mamot.fr on CBC's Understood podcast.

Google Search was the gold standard — a product born in a dorm room during the internet’s early, idealistic era. But when internal emails surfaced they revealed a deeper conflict inside the company: was Google making Search worse, on purpose, to boost ad revenue? Google says its changes are all about benefiting users. Critics say it’s all part of a bigger pattern — one that host Cory Doctorow calls enshittification: the slow, deliberate decay of platforms in the name of profit.

Have you noticed internet search has become next to useless? It's like the arms-race between search and spam is ramping up, and not in a good way. Cory lays out the foundation that it isn't that simple, and that the degradation of search was brought on internally.

Check it out here or wherever you get your podcasts!

Researching for a script and I turned to the brilliant blog of sorely missed local historian, Alistair Livingston.
Alistair left us some years ago, and the excerpt below was written in 2018*.
We were fooled in the first decade of this century into believing we had it all figured out. Alistair would not be very happy with where we are now.

* edit: double checked the age of the post, doesn't change sentiment!

Imagine having a bicycle with a closed chain guard. One day the chain falls off & you realize it's assembled with tamper-proof screws.

Now imagine the manufacturer wanting to make unscrewing that screw a felony carrying a 5-year prison sentence & a $500K fine.

They'd be booed out of business, if not institutionalized.

None the less, that's EXACTLY how DMCA 1201 works.

Despite @pluralistic & others' efforts I feel this isn't clear to the general public.
