At my previous full-time role I worked on a simulator for just these sorts of black start events. The US has come very close to having regional outages of this scale several times in the last decade, and our black start capability is largely untested to my knowledge (by which I mean largely untested in real-world scenarios).

Ars Technica · Spain is about to face the challenge of a “black start”By John Timmer

I'm a former worker for one of the major electric power utilities in the Pacific Northwest. If that company lost 20% of its workers all at once, there sure as hell would be an effect on its ability to provide reliable service and to maintan its part of the grid.

But Trump and Musk don't care about small details like this.

Part of our energy problem here in the US: you could toast a slice of bread over a small burning stick. Given there's a healthy enough forest nearby, these regenerate and you'd effectively never run out. However, most of us have an appliance that uses so much electric power it'd take an Olympic athlete feverishly running a manual generator for the duration of the toasting process to generate it. We're needlessly substituting an elite energy slave for a stick when we make toast because we can and because the structure of things encourages it.

This is [going to be... don't mind the intro] a very
funny, entertaining and educative animation on
how 'bloody' INEFFECTIVE and expensive combustion cars are.
[ you know... this planet burning, gasguzzling, petrol binging, highly addictive, dinoeaters]

Putting aside the toxic nature of petrol burning, this is a comparison on the economic costs of the power to move a vehicle. Electricity vs Oil.

And in this video it is not really taken into account that EV's can be powered by your own solar panels. Which makes it completely free, barred the investment after that being paid off making it totally free. Free energy 🎉 🎇

Robert was delighted to be asked to do the voiceover for this incredible animation by Mark Linthicum looking at the truth behind which pollutes more - combustion engine vehicles or electric vehicles? Spoiler alert: It's not EVs!
We are delighted to share this with you as it is another tool to expose the truth behind vehicle pollution, as well as asking what we can all do to help combat this.
This is an open source project which means anyone can post this but please contact Mark via his YouTube page [-> enjoyableapps <-] to get permission first
Let's get this shared far and wide!"

With the solar #eclipse passing through the central United States today, I’m wondering how much impact #utility companies saw. Both loss of #photovoltaic power and added load from street lighting.

Maybe they had to adjust system loading and rates. Start up generation capacity, and tell huge customers like a steel mill “You can run production through the eclipse, but you’re going to pay a LOT more for power and demand over the next three hours…”
