Hello! I forgot to make an intro post when I moved to this instance. Ope!

I am Nessie. For entertainment, I make messes and then try and figure out how to clean them up. Aka I’m an artist, haha.

I’m interested in lots of stuff! Stuff like this:

#Poorskills #Repurposing #Degrowth #ZeroWaste #SolarPunk #HopePunk #Gardening #ScratchCooking #SeedSaving #HouseKeeping #SimpleLiving #Dyslexia #ElderCare #Biking #SlowLiving #Drawing #PenAndInk #MixedMediaArt #AltText #DisabilityRights

And a bunch of other things that’ll pop up as I go along. Pleased to meet you all and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Compassion *does* generate sympathy

My father-in-law (who's been an asshole since long before he voted for Trump) is dying at home, as he wants. Spouse and I are making it possible. This has been strongly proving the truism that just treating someone with compassion softens your feelings towards them, whether or not that's deliberate.

We still dislike him intensely, and are looking forward to his death. But my heartily despising him has faded to a cognitive recognition that those feelings were & are warranted, without being caught up in them. Spouse has noticed it, too, though I'm not presuming to describe his feelings.

Maybe we're just avoiding cognitive dissonance. Whatever it is, I'll take it. Looking after a dying person who's shifting in and out of lucidity is hard enough without my heart rate going up every time I talk to him.

Also? If nursing home staff were paid more than neurosurgeons, it wouldn't be enough.

"Malaysia is already an ageing society, with 8.1 per cent of its population aged 65 and above in 2024, according to the United Nations (UN) Development Programme.

This proportion is set to rise to 14.5 per cent – pushing Malaysia into aged status – by 2040, which is sooner than expected. The government’s previous forecast was 2044."

Authorities are awaiting necropsy results to determine how the couple’s kelpie mix died. Starvation could have been a cause of death but ofcls are still unsure, Phipps said, noting that dogs do not get sick from hantavirus. Zinna underwent a procedure on Feb 9, which could explain why the dog was in a crate…. The couple’s other 2 dogs were found alive & had been able to go in & out of the house through an open door, authorities said.

My partner was just commenting on how the set up for Librewolf starts out with all security measures on straight out of the gate and how fantastic it is for people who are dealing with elderly parents who maybe aren't as tech savvy or informed. The trouble shooting you are left with when they have any issue is minimal from that point, which based on my own experience is sometimes days of work trying to track down what exactly happened, with a parent who wasn't always honest about what went down. Keep your elders safe! Librewolf is great!

With how quickly norovirus ripped through father-in-law's household (unspouse is now sick, despite precautions), gotta rethink current preps. Biggest pain point* is FIL himself; cognitive decline means mask wearing and hand-washing is a hit/miss. How to keep us all safe if bird flu becomes a human issue too? #ElderCare #CognitiveDecline

*not meaning Pain In The Arse, though we can all be that too 🙂

If you have an older person in your life, and you think you might need to arrange that you have power of attorney of their finances at some point: don't wait too long to put that into place.

It's significantly more complicated to arrange that kind of thing when the person is frail and has difficulty walking.

Rather do it before it becomes completely necessary, than wait until it's difficult to arrange.

Japan loves robots, so with declining & aging population, pressures in health and elder care are enormous. So why not try robot caregivers?

We should be wary of this approach. Here’s what happened:
- lifting robots cumbersome, take too much time to move from room to room
- distraction & entertainment robot pets needed staff supervision
- recreation leader robots were repetitive, time-consuming, and ignored unless staff stayed involved

Judge refuses to issue injunction blocking nursing home staff mandates

>>In his decision siding with the federal government, United States District Judge Leonard T. Strand stated that “with regard to nearly every aspect of the final rule, the plaintiffs have failed to demonstrate that a preliminary injunction is necessary in order to preserve the status quo and prevent irreparable harm.”<<
