- Yes it is a failure of us who are #TechLiterates to increase #TechLiteraxy but it's also a failure of #education globally to teach anything but being a "#User" who's ignorant beyond mousing #Microsoft products. (See shitty certifications like #ECDL!)…
It's sad that #Xandros on the original #EeePC seems to be peak #Linux #Desktop when it comes to #TechIlliterates...

Installing AntiX on an Asus eeePC from 2007, now in 2025. AntiX install was much smoother than a few years ago. Just followed the tutorial on their website.https://antixlinux.com/ I didn't even have wifi issues. Just remember to connect to wifi during live boot sesh and check 'save live' during install. Not exactly sure what It can do. Maybe some light writing and offline use? Hook it up to an external HD for backups? A WIX server?

I miss the #EeePC. Those were the perfect form factor. Nothing today comes close. Can't even find the form factor on AliExpress even any more.

@Linux @BrodieOnLinux @rejzor the best #Linux experience any #distro delivered was the #EeePC 701 4G's custom #Xandros Desktop.
- Nothing to this day comes close in terms of "user friendlyness" aiming at "#TechIlliterates".
It's basically peak #FrutigerAero and it ran off 256MB RAM!
- We really could taka a page from it's book!

I see the hardware is of course an important aspect.
You could also try fread from #rdatatable and see if this works better for you.
Since I have quite powerful laptop, I rarely come to the limits. But this was different in the past. I did my doctoral thesis (R package development included) in part on an #EeePC. That was fun.
I found another old EeePC. I think this is a 901 and originally ran Windows. Seems I installed the “Raspberry Pi Desktop Edition” back around 2018 or so…
Here's a 2008 photo of me taken from the EeePC 701 when I was using it to capture time lapses... Maybe I should set it up for that again but with an external camera...

Problemi riscontrati risolvibili:
- pila tampone cr2032 da sostituire (non mantiene le impostazioni di orario del bios) attualmente risolto con applicazione installata su sistema operativo
- la batteria non ha una autonomia notevole
- presenti alcuni graffi sulla scossa in plastica
- da configurare il wifi e il suono (installando altri pacchetti opzionali snd_hda_intel modulo) ma funziona con cavo di rete
Ideale per elaborare documenti e visionare internet in viaggio per il suo piccolo ingombro ed il peso irrisorio.
Non contiene scatola originale e non si spedisce per cui chi vuole può prendere contatti direttamente e passare a Chignolo Po (PV) per il ritiro.

I found my old Asus EeePC 701 (the original netbook!) and it booted up into Ubuntu, which I think I installed in 2018. Battery is totally dead and WiFi networking doesn’t seem to work… may need to plug in Ethernet. But what should I actually do with it?

@ustralien Sadly no, and that's my big disappointment!
@frameworkcomputer decided to choose the #Apple-esque "flat cells below #trackpad" design in the unreasonable #THINN-ness race instead of doing what even the #EeePC and #Sony's #Vaio #P11Z did and have a slot at the back to chug in batteries!
- I know why they did it, as a closed aluminium pan aka. "#lunchbox" design is easier to fabricate, but I'd rather some #ToolfreeSwappableBattery which are IMHO of more practicality than having the ability to swap out every port.
Not that I don't like those #modules, but I'd rather wish for a "#THICC-er" device if that gets me essentials like #Ethernet, #USB-A & -C as well as a #TRRS #HeadphoneJack / #HeadsetJack.
- I mean, I understand they won't make space for a underslung #Dock, a #Slimline - #ODD or god forbid #ExpressCard, and in terms of #tech I'd welcome #Thunderbolt over #OCuLink, but there's a reason I've not canceled the #NUCbook and if I didn't have to buy/procure #COTS products I'd likely just buy a #Pi500 with a #Powerbank and screen slapped on...
That being said the #Framework is still by a long margin the "least #enshittified" device on the market, and same goes for the #Fairphone devices...
- I just wished #FrameworkLaptop and Fairphone were just refusing the #Enshittification trend entirely, cuz I'd rather have a #Toughbook-Style device made out of #Thinkpadnium or even better #Nokianite than some fancy Aluminium stuff if that makes it more #repairable, #upradeable and espechally doesn't result in a #Downgrade.
Not to mention they don't have an #UltraNav-Style #Trackpoint and I do use that instead of a Trackpad.
- The only reason I'm not daily driving my #P11Z anymore is because until I got @OS1337 into a useable state it's hardware, which was already #LowEnd at launch, can barely run @bunsenlabs and thus is not an option for #DailyDriving #Linux #Desktop workflows anyways...
I feel this video by Posy about the design of his first laptop, because just as for me, it was a #netbook. Although I had an Asus #EeePC. I wrote my first paid websites on that machine. And its high portability served me well during a tumultuous period of my life.
