Meanwhile, I was just trying to “make it in America.” Exactly eight years ago today, I was leading the fifth day of a historic university sit-in that repeated the 1969 sit-in in the exact same location. We completely shut down the President’s Office and the entire administrative building for two weeks after it was discovered that an university executive “allegedly” called a parking attendant the n-word. Of course, this was never seen as “leadership” by the ruling class. Instead, we were surveilled, infiltrated, and intimidated by the campus police. I no longer look at these Forbes lists. But I do still wonder where many of us, particularly low-income folks and immigrants without any support networks or wealth, would have been by now, and what we would have achieved, if we didn't have to start from scratch. • The research by Forbes magazine found there were 15 billionaires aged 30 or under but that none had created their own wealth, instead benefitting from huge inheritances. • It signals the first wave of "the great wealth transfer", in which more than 1,000 wealthy people are expected to pass on more than $5.2tn (£4.1tn) to their heirs over the next two decades. • There are already more billionaires than ever before (2,781), and the number is expected to soar in the coming years as an elderly generation of super-rich people prepare to give their fortunes to their children. I’ve received news that the entire deaf scientist pipeline has been dismantled, creating a significant gap in the development of future generations of deaf researchers. This pipeline, built over nearly 20 years, was designed to support deaf students at every stage of their academic journey—from high school to undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral training. I have had the privilege of being part of every stage of this pipeline, either as a student, mentor, or teacher. My journey through the deaf scientist pipeline have been the most rewarding experiences of my life and career and truly have shaped me into the scientist I am today. Growing up, I didn’t have any deaf role models in science. Now, I am proud to serve as one for future generations of deaf scientists. But today, with the dismantling of the only deaf scientist pipeline in the world, I am devastated. However, my determination remains strong, and I will continue to work towards rebuilding this pipeline when we are able. The dismantling of the deaf scientist pipeline will have a severe and lasting impact on future generations, leading to a continued lack of deaf scientists, the isolation of deaf students, and a diminished supply of deaf mentors in the scientific community. My heart and brain cannot fathom why this had to happen, why the administration would destroy so many good things, like this. The damage it’s causing is unnecessary, and it’s hard to understand why this was the choice made. It’s a deep disappointment to see many meaningful programs get torn down, especially when it meant so much to so many of us. The impact of those choices will forever affect us—science, the deaf community, and future generations of deaf scientists. It's devastating to see the work we’ve put in for years get dismantled, especially when it was built to empower and support a community that has long been underrepresented. 1. Learn to spot the signs of patterns of domination (like the shoots of some invasive plant such as knot-weed, popping up here & there).

2. Practice understanding the relationship between those signs of domination (like figuring out where the roots of the knot-weed are beneath the soil)

3. Make new signs – ones that tell a different, more mutual story (like gradually sowing a new ecosystem into ground previously dominated by one).
