deantoir_ceardaiochta<p>My summer reading. Seth Abrutyn<p>How do we make sense of <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Durkheim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Durkheim</span></a>'s fatalistic <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/suicide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>suicide</span></a>? It is a single paragraph in a footnote at the end of the empirical chapters. It lacks overwhelming evidence; it uses anecdotes; it denies its contemporary relevance; &amp; his chapter on anomic suicide touches on over-regulation at times. Seth Abrutyn<p>Following the macro-level typology, the paper posits a typology at the level of <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/emotion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emotion</span></a>. On the integration dimension, sadness-happiness are the affectual motivators for egoisim-altruism. For the regulation dimension, shame, in different forms. characterizes these suicides. From there, the paper can expand the basic four-fold model to really explain what <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Durkheim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Durkheim</span></a> intended with his mixed-forms (see the last chapter of Book II, The Individual Forms). </p><p>This paper was a joy to think through.</p>
Jessica Kant<p>The competing frame of late 19th century <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociology</span></a> contending with <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/psychoanalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychoanalysis</span></a> created an environment in which fields were tripping over themselves to generate knowledge. In my admittedly biased frame, while <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Durkheim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Durkheim</span></a> was asking powerful questions about the meaning + function of phenomena like violence, <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Freud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Freud</span></a> was attempting to reduce it to a drive, only subordinate to sex. Once the machinations of power saw how Hobbesian late Freud was, it was clear who was the enemy and it wasn't Freud.</p>
