Yesterday's RoseI've never been as happy with <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Duolingo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Duolingo</a> as I'm now. I was wondering how the French course would introduce <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/turtles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#turtles</a>. (Not an everyday topic for most people.) Why, of course, by talking about my favourite <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/scifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#scifi</a> creatures: THE SPACE TURTLES. 🐢🌌 (For the record, my favourite <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fantasy</a> creatures are the Flying Turtles.)

mausmaloneSo here are my thoughts on having completed <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Duolingo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Duolingo</a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Japanese" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Japanese</a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E8%AA%9E" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#日本語</a> 1) People who say you "can't learn Japanese through Duolingo" are right, but you can't learn any language through any one app or course, full stop. 2) You will be exposed to a huge number of words and topics not covered in anime or manga. 3) Duolingo is EXCELLENT at teaching you hiragana and katakana when you're first starting. 4) Since Duolingo doesn't explain ANY grammar, you have to learn particles based on vibes alone.

Ich versuche es mit Schwedisch und bin erst bei Tag 3. Heute werde ich lauter Sachen gefragt, die ich nicht wissen kann. Vokabeln, Pluralformen, Artikel, ich habe echt keinen Plan. Bevor die Lektion zu Ende war, war wegen der ganzen Fehler die Energie alle. Ich habe welche nachgekauft und nochmal probiert, aber dann kamen noch mehr neue Wörter und unverständliche Sätze. Was läuft da schief! Bei anderen geht‘s doch auch?

It’s really well-written and makes language learning fun, b/c it’s gamified. It’s fun, but sometimes I mix up which word is what depending on which language I’m currently practicing (Elle vs Él, for instance). And sometimes I combine words.
