#Choughs breed in #Kent for first time in 200 years https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/aug/02/choughs-breed-in-kent-for-first-time-in-200-years
A young pair among eight #birds released last year defied expectations to successfully breed this summer, making a nest on #DoverCastle and rearing one chick, which fledged in June. The milestone is an unexpectedly early success for the long-term project to bring the red-billed birds back to the Kent coastline.
Day trip out to Dover Castle.
Artillery weapons in medieval Europe included the mounted crossbow (ballista) and single-arm torsion catapult (mangonel), both similar to ancient Roman machines. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1231/artillery-in-medieval-europe/ #History #Crusades #DoverCastle #FirstCrusade
If one was looking to enjoy a fine meal in the medieval world then the best place to find a handsomely laid dinner table was in the local castle. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1229/food-in-an-english-medieval-castle/ #History #CastleKeep #ChepstowCastle #DoverCastle
Can just make out #DoverCastle on the top best of luck with the festival!
Madness at #Dover again - some sort of IT glitch apparently - approach road was coned off just as we arrived at the roundabout. On the plus side got to drive past #Dovercastle which was packed for an event -must be awful for the local people with gridlocks. People already here at the port waiting 3hrs-PortOfDover on birdsite saying its 30 min wait haha! -not not clear why they don’t reopen #Ramsgate and the old #Hoverport-mad to have one gateway at the shortest sea crossing to Europe -oh dear..
An English medieval castle, if a large one, could have a household staff of at least 50 people, which included all manner of specialised and skilled workers such as cooks, grooms, carpenters, masons, falconers, and musicians, as well as a compliment of knights, bowmen, and crossbow operators. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1234/the-household-staff-in-an-english-medieval-castle/ #History #CastleKeep #ChepstowCastle #DoverCastle
William the Conqueror (r. 1066-1087 CE) was victorious at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066 CE, and Harold Godwinson, King Harold II of England (r. Jan - Oct 1066 CE) was dead.https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1318/william-the-conquerors-march-on-london/ #BattleofHastings #BayeuxTapestry #DoverCastle #History
Bit out of the norm as you can actually visit this tunnel complex deep beneath #DoverCastle in #Kent. This is a photo of the #TelephoneExchange in the #CasemateLevel of the #tunnels. Rare to see it without the public tho.
There are actually 5 levels, the staff say there are 3, and 1 hasn't been found.
A - #Annex - done
B - #Bastion - missing?
C - #Casemate - done
D - #DUMPY - done
E - #Esplanade - done (they say it doesn't exist lol.)
Will post more later on.
Dover Castle, located in the southern county of Kent, is one of the largest castles in England and one of the first to have concentric defensive walls. First built in 1066 CE by William the Conqueror to help prevent anyone repeating his own invasion, the castle was largely rebuilt in stone and a massive keep added by Henry II in the latter half of the 12th century CE. Despite its fine defences,...https://www.worldhistory.org/Dover_Castle/ #CastleKeep #DoverCastle #GreatHall
I don't claim to be a photographer. However, I do occasionally enjoy taking pictures with my off-brand phone and editting them in Lightroom.
As my first post on Mastodon, I share a couple of mine from Dover Castle.
