@opensuse I don't use openSUSE as I installed it once and it broke upon booting. I Prefer debian to people who do not want their system to break, lmao. #debian #debian13 #DebianBookworm #linux

#TIL: A #Xen #Dom0 running #Debian 12 Bookworm or #Gentoo may crash xenconsoled or xenstored upon #DomU boot if the Dom0 initially has too much RAM:
kernel BUG at arch/x86/xen/p2m.c:542!
In my case it happened with #DebianBookworm's kernel 6.1.0-21-amd64 and in the case of https://bugs.gentoo.org/920747 (via https://lists.xenproject.org/archives/html/xen-users/2023-12/msg00005.html) it was Gentoo's 6.1.67-gentoo-x86_64, both with 64 GB.
Fix:
/etc/default/grub += GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M"
/etc/xen/xl.conf += autoballoon=0

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is mocassin. mocassin is a fully 3D or 2D photoionisation and dust radiative transfer code which employs a Monte Carlo approach to the transfer of radiation through media of arbitrary geometry and density distribution. It was originally developed for the modelling of photoionised regions like HII regions and planetary nebulae and has since expanded and been applied to a

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is libplplot-dev. PLplot is relatively small, portable, freely distributable, and is rich enough to satisfy most users. It has a wide range of plot types including line (linear, log), contour, 3D, fill, and almost 1000 characters (including Greek and mathematical) in its extended font set. The package is designed to make it easy to quickly get graphical output;

I spent few hours debugging cron task that fails to trigger.
I discovered, that #Debian cloud image is without cron package installed by default
I wonder if this changed in #DebianBookworm or it's my new discovery as I moved all my #VM from #Ubuntu to #debian12 recently.
After 18 years of Ubuntu in different flavors, just installed today #debian12 on a Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G2 (i5 + Intel Iris Xe Graphics) and everything works perfectly and faster than I thought.. I like the Gnome essentials and the stability of the OS. My Ubuntu desktop will follow soon, I guess.
Thanks Debian for this 30yrs work, and thanks Ubuntu for bringing me this far... (I'm not a nerd, just an enthusiastic user)

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is aladin. Aladin is an interactive software sky atlas allowing the user to visualise digitised astronomical images, to superimpose entries from astronomical catalogues or databases, and to interactively access related data and information from the Simbad database, the VizieR service and other archives for all known sources in the field.

#Linux #DebianBookworm / #Debian12 seems to have serious kernel issues these few days. Kernel version 6.1.0-14 had a potential file corruption problem and the newer version (6.1.0-15) which should have fixed the issue produces system freezes. I deleted the version 15 again and am sitting on version 13 until the storm is over.

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is python3-pydl. PyDL consists of Python replacements for functions that are part of the IDL built-in library or part of astronomical IDL libraries. The emphasis is on reproducing results of the astronomical library functions. Only the bare minimum of IDL built-in functions are implemented to support this.
There are four astronomical libraries targeted:

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is libgsl-dev. The GNU Scientific Library (GSL) is a collection of routines for numerical analysis. The routines are written from scratch by the GSL team in C, and present a modern API for C programmers, while allowing wrappers to be written for very high level languages.
