Dr Pen<p>Reactions to this morning's flurry of fairly pithy posts from Ben Williamson. Anger is an energy. Ed-tech is a mess, uncritical adoption dating back a long time led to the current situation. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>academia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/academicchatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>academicchatter</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>education</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/genai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>genai</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Datasociety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Datasociety</span></a> </p><p>The righteous ire of Ben Williamson | penworks.net</p><p><a href="https://penworks.net/blog/the-righteous-ire-of-ben-williamson" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">penworks.net/blog/the-righteou</span><span class="invisible">s-ire-of-ben-williamson</span></a></p>

Dr Pen<p>The Bluesky shareholders are competitors to Fediverse apps. They ARE very commercial, they are data extractive (eg see screenshots of the link referral). The new socmed commercial companies are now really understanding that Megacorps Socmed will not last, and they are coming for our data. But, we are the Freeverse and I think it makes no difference to us. I do think fedi ppl are a bit different, we want something different.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bluesky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bluesky</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Datasociety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Datasociety</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/data" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>data</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://techcrunch.com/2025/01/15/bluesky-is-getting-its-own-photo-sharing-app-flashes/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">techcrunch.com/2025/01/15/blue</span><span class="invisible">sky-is-getting-its-own-photo-sharing-app-flashes/</span></a></p>

Chris Lemoine<p>Rebecca Solnit is almost always good, and I recommend any of her books, but this article is particularly brilliant and enjoyable. It summarizes the digital zombie invasion in our cities and communities and how this miserable everyday experience impoverishes our lives and communities. And asks what we can do about it. Also, the illustrations are inspired. Dr Pen<p>Today I woke up thinking: of all the tech Ive learned, hacked up, botched, worked with, watched being innovated, done evaluation studies on, made money with, enjoyed... Dr Pen<p>Im searching around for good sources to build a paper on technosocial contracts for urban citizen learning. Dr Pen<p>The commodified identity of the digitised self: every data point is owned by Megacorps. Each tiny piece of data generated by any action or interaction is seeded, propagated, sold and resold. That's it. That is all it amounts to. penworks OLD ACCOUNT<p>𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮<br>==========================</p><p>I noted with some concern that my institution's advice on email signature includes every proprietary socmed platform - an icon list of 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗫, 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺, 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗸𝗧𝗼𝗸. It made me recall the days a decade ago when HE had not even heard of socmed, nevermind utilised it for 'brand' or L&amp;T. But I now yearn for those days. That list is 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲, including actors that are considered 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 by western nations (TikTok), or spread 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 so much that the EU digital rights chief (Thierry Breton) gives a 24 hr warning to Musk about it.</p><p>Yet, we are advised to literally connect our *every email* to these platforms and our profiles on them (and subsequently our university servers and technical infrastructure). Are we mad? Yes, it's a bit like 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗺 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲, in thrall to big tech and our perceived huge self importance, or ultra tech-bro hipness.</p><p>Speaking as an ex senior lecturer who at one time promoted all use of socmed in L&amp;T and for uni or faculty branding, and even ran a big academic project with it - here are my current rules for use of email, connecting to your socmed profiles, and general use of socmed:</p><p>1. Stop using any socmed in your L&amp;T. It places student data and privacy at high risk. Youre also giving L&amp;T content to proprietary platforms. Don't.<br>2. Stop giving your email so haphazardly to anyone. Its an open invitation to identity theft, or at the least, spamming.<br>3. Stop putting your life history on your Facebook profile. Its an open invitation to identity theft.<br>4. Place minimal academic biography on LinkedIn, that you regularly update (ie that can only be cached for short periods).<br>5. Leave X. Never use it for professional content dissemination. You are compromising everyone else to expect them to use that platform.<br>6. Never use TikTok for L&amp;T. Just dont do it.<br>7. If you really must use Instagram (for anything), just use it as a personal thing, dont involve your place of work.</p><p>Remember, I have a fair amount of tech knowledge as well as academic experience at this stuff.</p><p><a href="https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/feature/TikTok-bans-explained-Everything-you-need-to-know" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">techtarget.com/whatis/feature/</span><span class="invisible">TikTok-bans-explained-Everything-you-need-to-know</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.euronews.com/next/2023/10/11/eus-thierry-breton-gives-elon-musk-24-hour-ultimatum-to-deal-with-israel-hamas-misinformat" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">euronews.com/next/2023/10/11/e</span><span class="invisible">us-thierry-breton-gives-elon-musk-24-hour-ultimatum-to-deal-with-israel-hamas-misinformat</span></a></p><p><a href="https://lor.sh/tags/academicmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>academicmastodon</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/academicchatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>academicchatter</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/academic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>academic</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/socialmedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>socialmedia</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/datasociety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>datasociety</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/data" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>data</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a> <a href="https://lor.sh/tags/education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>education</span></a></p>
