Ah yes, the magic words “I will file a complaint with the relevant regulatory agencies” really do grease the wheels with data privacy requests.

Magically “there’s really not much we can do because our customer is the one who owns your data” becomes “we have initiated a deletion of your records within our customer’s account and have started an investigation into possible violations of our Acceptable Use Policy”.

Never hesitate to shake the branch when dealing with corporations. In Europe, California, and a growing list of other places you have an absolute right to control your personal data.

Have you considered quitting that Microsoft 365 subscription that quietly doubled in price?

Update: This piece is getting some interesting pushback from parents who think I'm being alarmist about AI toys over on my other social platforms.

On the other side of that, I'm hearing so many people taking the usual "AI BAAAAD" stance, some of those people thinking I agree with them simply because I took a hardliner stance in this post.

For clarification: I'm not anti-AI. I use these tools daily for my research and writing as well as accessibility aids to offset some of the disadvantages I face due to my blindness. I study AI from the computer scientist perspective and am studying to be an elementary teacher precisely because I see AI's educational potential. I'm not even entirely against the idea of AI companionship, if it's framed right.

What actually bothers me is the business model. When Moxie robots suddenly "died" last year because the company went under, kids had to grieve their artificial friend. Parents got a scripted letter to explain why their $799 companion stopped talking which provided little comfort to kids who experienced digital abandonment. Trust me, the videos I've seen of kids crying because their beloved friend unexpectedly died over night is truly heartbreaking.

That's no glitch, that's what happens when you outsource childhood relationships to venture capital that only cares about investment returns.

The real question isn't whether AI toys are inherently bad. It's whether we're okay with corporations experimenting on our kids' emotional development while claiming it's "age-appropriate play."

What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments.

I just say no to a doctor who wants to use AI to record a consultation with me. I don't visit doctors often but when I have been asked for permission I have said no.

The reasons I have for not giving permission are:
1. No written privacy policy and statement about how my data will be used, stored and protected.
2. No demonstration of how the AI has been rigorously developed and tested by professionals who are properly qualified to eliminate bias.
3. No written promise that I can review the notes about the consult so that I know what is in my medical record and fix any inaccuracies about what I said, did etc.

There is a lot of bias against older women among health professionals, whether explicit or subconscious. The risk of bias negatively impacting me is very high.

In the period from July to December 2024 the health industry in Australia reported the most number of data breaches of any industry according to the Office of the Australian Information commissioner.

A major data privacy lawsuit has concluded. The class action against Flo Health and Meta Platforms stemmed from allegations that the Flo period-tracking app shared sensitive user health information with third parties, including Meta, without proper consent. This isn't just about privacy — it's about accountability.
