The first round of seeds for my container garden have all germinated! It’s the first year I’m using heirloom seeds I saved from a previous crop. I’ve got basil, white cherry and Brandywine tomatoes, and Jimmy Nardello and Bulgarian carrot peppers 
After many years of building buds and dropping them, the camellias are finally flowering.
The trick? A mild winter, pots packed up with straw, and staying outside on the east balcony the entire time.

Lettuce isn't germinating yet, but that's not a problem. Indoor garden is producing enough for both me and the birds daily. I get the stuff on the bread, under some ham and mustard, the budgies get the stuff on the plate. That's beet, kale, carrot top, chickweed, dandelion, and plantain. Just whatever leaves were blocking the most light.

My other favourite germination trick is so simple. Place the seeds on paper kitchen towels, lock them in a clear zip baggie, spray the paper towel a few times and zip the bag.
During the day I place the bags near a sunlit window sill, at night I place them near the baseboards (thanks Canadian winter:-)). No need for expensive heating pads/mats.

Even a balcony or shelves in front of a picture window can grow quite a bit of food, you know. Try it.
This is chaos, a chaotic method that has served me well in my newbie gardener journey.
Juice box, open it horizontally, make some drainage holes in the bottom, fill with soil, scatter seeds (no measuring, no distancing).
Once seedlings are hearty enough, I transplant them to individual containers (which once true leaves appear will go into their permanent container).
