"An effigy symbolising Sheikh Hasina’s fascism was set ablaze on Saturday at the Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka University, prompting Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki to condemn the act, accuse Awami League allies and call for quick legal action.

The 1432 Bengali New Year's theme 'New Year's Harmony, End of Fascism' was inspired by the July-August mass uprising, and the traditional procession which was named 'Borshoboron Anondo Shobhajatra' (formerly 'Mongol Shobhajatra') on Friday by Dhaka University, was all set to feature a 20-foot-high motif called the 'Face of Fascism'.

Crafted from bamboo and cane, the depiction portrayed a woman with a toothy grin, four horns on her head, a large nose, and two fearful eyes. The striking image led many to believe it resembled ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Saturday early morning, a fire broke out at the Fine Arts Faculty where the motifs were being made: the monstrous fascist face motif was completely burnt in the fire, while the dove of peace motif was also partially burnt.

In a Facebook post made Saturday morning, Farooki condemned the incident and warned that those involved - regardless of political label - must face legal consequences."

"Tropical cyclones are hurricanes that brew over the tropical ocean and can travel over land, inundating coastal regions. The most extreme cyclones can generate devastating storm tides—seawater that is heightened by the tides and swells onto land, causing catastrophic flood events in coastal regions.

A new study by MIT scientists finds that, as the planet warms, the recurrence of destructive storm tides will increase tenfold for one of the hardest-hit regions of the world.

In a study published in One Earth, scientists report that, for the highly populated coastal country of Bangladesh, what was once a 100-year event could now strike every 10 years—or more often—by the end of the century."

Trump’s tariffs may be perilous for small, heavily indebted countries in global south. “Garment workers in countries such as Cambodia among those who fear they will lose pay cheques if companies move production elsewhere… One of the most wilfully destructive aspects of Donald #Trump’s shock & awe #trade policy is the imposition of punitive #tariffs on developing countries across Asia, including rates of 49% for #Cambodia, 37% for #Bangladesh, 48% for #Laos. | The Guardian theguardian.com/business/2025/

Walking through an #OldNavy store (budget clothing in USA) & noting that everything I'm checking is made in #Vietnam or #Bangladesh. I don't remember what the #tariff on Bangladesh was but 96% rings a bell for Vietnam. Old Navy, like most retailers in their space, has something like 7-10% margin. Prices here will effectively double leaving #lowincome & #middleincome folks in a pinch and Old Navy and similar companies in trouble. Everyone is in trouble.

"National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said they will never accept the rehabilitation of the Awami League, accusing the ousted party of committing genocide and crimes against humanity in Bangladesh.

'If anyone from the Awami League dares to join any programme of NCP in any way, we will resist and hand them over to the law. We believe that those who established fascism in Bangladesh have no moral right to do politics in the country,' he said.

Akhtar said this while talking to local journalists after attending a discussion held with NCP organizers at the Rangpur Chamber Building Auditorium on Friday night.

In response to a question, he said, 'In the current situation in Bangladesh, it is crucial to bring to justice those who committed genocide during the 2024 mass uprising.'

'This trial should not only focus on individuals, but also address the crimes against humanity that the Awami League, as a party, has inflicted on Bangladesh,' he added."
