Stefano Marinelli<p>Proof that *BSD truly nourishes! <br>Just dropped off a FreeBSD server for a client (a bakery, how cool is that?!) who's already a *BSD evangelist (they've been running FreeBSD &amp; OpenBSD thanks to my earlier installs). <br>They were so chuffed, they sent me home with a haul of their yummy products! </p><p>Best. Stefano Marinelli<p>When I complain that some software (or its dependencies) doesn't work on *BSD but requires Linux, I'm not criticizing Linux. For me, it's not an OS battle, but a matter of freedom and avoiding a dangerous and rampant computing monoculture. KaiXinWhat a big surprise! I just found out that <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=openbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#OpenBSD</a> suspend to S3 and wake up worked flawlessly on my <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=thinkpad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ThinkPad</a> T470S. <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=x" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#X</a> with good old <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Fvwm</a> and network with WiFi worked fine after wakeup. Fn function keys for backlight. I previously tested <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> and everything was working great too which is no surprise at all. I don't know if it's because tp had better support for <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe?t=unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Unix</a> or because devs tend to use tp thus support them at greater effort. Dendrobatus Azureus<p>A nice post about switching from a Linux distribution to freeBSD.</p><p>Quote <br>&gt;&gt;<br>The interesting thing here is that both are similar and yet very different, mainly owing to their very different histories, with freeBSD being a direct derivative of the original UNIX and its BSD derivative. One of the most significant differences is probably that Linux is just a kernel, with (usually) the GNU/Hurd userland glued on top of it to create GNU/Linux. GNU and BSD userland are similar, and yet different, with varying levels of POSIX support. This effectively means that freeBSD is a singular OS with rather nice documentation (the FreeBSD handbook).</p><p>The basic summary here is that freeBSD is rather impressive and easy to set up for a desktop, especially if you use a customized version like GhostBSD. <br>&gt;&gt;</p><p><a href="https://hackaday.com/2025/06/29/switching-from-desktop-linux-to-freebsd/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">hackaday.com/2025/06/29/switch</span><span class="invisible">ing-from-desktop-linux-to-freebsd/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/GNU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GNU</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/GPL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GPL</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/kernel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kernel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/freeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freeBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ghostBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ghostBSD</span></a> </p><p>^Z</p>
