sgt1372<p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Movies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Movies</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AAPI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AAPI</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AsianFetish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AsianFetish</span></a></p><p>I just re-watched the 1958 version of <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/TheQuietAmerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TheQuietAmerican</span></a> (starring Audey Murphy, an English actor whose name you'd never remember &amp; an Italian actress in <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/YellowFace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>YellowFace</span></a>) which is set in <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Indochina" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Indochina</span></a> (aka <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/VietNam" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VietNam</span></a>) in the 50's during the Vietnamese war vs the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/French" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>French</span></a> colonialist but is really about a <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/LoveTriange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LoveTriange</span></a> between an <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/American" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>American</span></a> (who is probably a CIA -- then still probably known as the OSS -- agent, an English journalist &amp; his Vietnamese mistress.</p><p>The film was remade in 2002 in a movie by the same name starring Michael Caine &amp; Brendan Frazer. The 1958 movie is the better of the 2.</p><p>I have mixed feelings about this movie about 2 white men competing for an Asian woman, which reeks of the white male fetishization of Asian women but, if you strip away the inter-racial aspects of the film, it's mainly about what a man will do to save his relationship (including setting up his rival to be murdered) with the woman he loves.</p><p>I still give it a 6 out of 10 &amp; own the DVDs of both versions.</p>
