Serge from Babka
I have an amazing setup at home with Jellyfin and other self-hosted apps.

Now I'd like to get away from Roku and I think the easiest way to do that would likely be an unGoogled Android TV box.

Does anyone know of an UnGoogled Android TV box?

If not, any suggestions for an out of the box TV setup that will let me run Android or Roku without the spyware and ads?

Note that I don't want to build the hardware myself (been there, done that in my 20s), and I don't want to run plain Linux and use a web browser. I want to run apps (likely Android apps) on the TV using an out of the box remote, and connect to my Jellyfin and other home services).

#Android #AndroidTV

Because of that I've now been able to make more visible changes. 👏

The next major release (version 0.19.0) will have a completely redesigned top bar and an entirely new search screen, with voice-search! 🎤

The navigation on top is not in the final state yet, it will be enhanced over time. #SideProject: with the rise of #linux based SBC and all the awesome things people do with them I was thinking but with the fact that they are increasingly not cheap, is there a source of #linux devices that could be hacked to be useful.

After a bit of research I thought #AndroidTV boxes might be a good target, there are loads of projects putting Linux on them which is a good start.

So off to AliExpress I go, after a bit of browsing I take a risk and order a cheap (£20) androidtv box which claims to have a allwinner H313 and the option of 8Gb ram...

Here begins a little hacking thread of when it arrived 1/n

A new release of @jellyfin for #AndroidTV is now rolling out. Version 0.18.5 fixes some small issues you probably haven't encountered!

I'm continuing work on the 0.19 release which will have one of the most requested features. Unfortunately life is very busy so progress is slow. Much thanks to the complete Jellyfin team, all community members and my GitHub sponsors for all the support!

Screw that. 😡

I am proud owner of a dumb TV, and until couple of month ago owned a dumb TV subscription at #KPN Netherlands. Quit that, trying without #TV .. but decided to reactivate. So I renew my subscription, received a new set-top box.

Oh noos! comes bundled with #AndroidTV. 😱

My telecom provider forces me to sell out to #Google, an #Advertisement & #SurveillanceCapitalism giant.

Literally the whole anti #privacy shenanigans forced through the throat.

NO WAY!

I'm not having much #luck with my #AndroidTV boxes. One Nvidia died after 4½ years, the replacement after 2½ years. Got an #Onn #GoogleTV box after that, and today, after nine months, it's gone into a boot loop. Or more properly, a home screen loop.

When the box is about to get to the home screen, you see gray boxes and rectangles where pictures and text will appear, then the pictures and text do appear, then the screen blanks out for a second, then it goes back to gray boxes as the loop continues. (Tried to upload a clip, but that failed twice.)

What #MediaPlayer should I buy next, expecting it to last five months? #StreamingBox
