THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN NIGHTMARE

" Owning your own home has long been part of the Australian dream. It's turned into a nightmare....Duncan and Sue are saving to buy a house, like many young people. They're lucky, for both are working - Duncan as a building worker and Sue in an office.
No matter how hard they save, that home-of-their-own moves further away. Their deposit never seems big enough and high interest rates mean crippling
repayments. So Duncan and Sue have to rent, "paying money out to tread water -not getting anywhere". Until recently, seven out of 10 Australians could buy their own homes but now fewer than four
out of 10 can afford it." (1978)

When I say politics is life for poor people, this is is what I mean.

For you, it seems ok.

For me, it's death.

It means no more markets, no more Cheaper Buy Miles, no more Kimchi Grocer, no more local shops, no more Aldi.

I would only be allowed to spend a decreased amount of money in Coles or Woolworths, that's it.

I'm not even sure I'd be able to buy medical cannabis any more.

All because the Liberal Party want to punish the poor

There we go, Libs want to cut social security.

Spread it far and wide: just as we're screaming out while struggling, they're coming for us.

If you vote or preference Liberals or their cronies, you are a monster. There's no two ways about that one

Oh god, no one from the Coalition turned up to Afternoon Briefing.

I don't normally watch the show, but during an election, it's good to see what the general public watch.

That's an admission it's over, as far as I'm concerned

The seat of Wills in Melbourne's inner north is a big target for the Greens this election. It is one of their most winnable seats. It is a straight Labor vs Greens contest

"This is an area the Greens have had their eyes on for over a decade, ever since the party managed to secure Adam Bandt's seat of Melbourne next door."

One of the obvious problems with policies that target reducing house prices to make buying a house easier is that once people have brought a house they move to having an incentive for house prices to rise. Nobody wants to be paying interest on an asset for 30yrs that is worth less than what you paid for it.

This is why any policy that targets housing affordability needs to target renting and long term renting.

Australia doesn't consider renting long term to be something that people want to do, everyone is expected to want to be a housing investor as soon as they can afford the deposit. (why wouldn't they when housing is such a good investment atm?)

You shouldn't need to own a house to have a long term, stable, comfortable home. Most people don't need a housing asset to pass down to their children, they just need a stable place to live and retire in.

The private rental market can't provide long term stability without a lot of regulation so we need that regulation.

If I've got a stable long term lease then I'd be happy to pay to install a dishwasher or air conditioning for my own use. I'd pay to paint the house a colour I like and I'd pay for new

I grew up in co-operative housing provided by CEHL (cehl.com.au/), they charged a rent of 25% of your income capped at a maximum 'cost rent' (In today's money it would be $460/w for a 4 bedroom house with a big backyard in Collingwood, after my parent's moved out we crammed 7 students in to that house). I lived in that rental house for 25yrs.

The properties were managed by a group of the tenants who made sure rents were collected and organised maintenance.

25% of the rent you paid was put toward maintenance of the properties, in the 90s when everyone was young we did a lot of our own maintenance together to save maintenance money.

Working-bee days to paint a house, sand wooden floorboards or build a nice backyard garden.

We can make long term stable renting a thing and we can build community around it.
