-Pero... ¿Qué manera de hablar es esa? ¿Cosas así pasan? Y solo pasan porque el país está lleno de gente que, cuando pasan estás cosas sólo dicen "estás cosas pasan" y por eso pasan.

"El mundo está loco, loco, loco" (1963) de Stanley Kramer

En 1962, Roger Corman adquirió por casi nada los derechos de la película soviética "Nebo Zovyot" (1959). Esta joya desconocida del cine espacial Soviético fue transformada en una película de terror espacial más acorde con los gustos estadounidenses.

Para dicha tarea eligió a un joven y prometedor estudiante de cine llamado Francis Ford #Coppola. Aunque fue acreditado como Thomas Colchart, podría decirse que esta película fue su estreno en el mundo profesional y ¿qué mejor que hacerlo de la mano de Roger Corman?

1 - La primera tarea de Francis Ford Coppola fue eliminar las referencias al conflicto entre Estados Unidos y la URSS , inventando un supuesto conflicto entre dos naciones post Guerra Nuclear... El Hemisferio Sur y el Hemisferio Norte. Los del hemisferio Sur son los buenos.

2 - Puso todo su empeño en eliminar toda referencia a la URSS en los letreros escritos en Cirílico y alguna que otra Estrella Roja . Las naves soviéticas se convirtieron por arte de magia en naves de la NASA. Aunque trabajó duro alguna que otra estrellita roja se coló.

3 - Dobló al Inglés la película, modificando algunos diálogos para adaptarlos a la nueva trama y a la "sensibilidad" estadounidense.

4 - Los nombres rusos del reparto original fueron modificados por otros nombres totalmente inventados usando la inicial del nombre y la inicial del apellido. Así Larysa Borysenko se transformó en Linda Barrett y Taisiya Litvinenko en Thomas Littleton entre otros.

5 - La nueva trama añadía dos monstruos con los que los astronautas tienen que lidiar. Uno muy semejante a los genitales femeninos y otro a los genitales masculinos ... No se comieron mucho la cabeza.

6 - Corman pensó que el público estadounidense no estaba preparado para una película de 77 minutos, así pues decidió acortarla 13 minutos en el montaje final dejando un metraje inconexo de monstruos, doblajes malos, y tramas absurdas.

Viy is a 1967 Soviet gothic horror film based on a Gogol story. A girl's corpse doesn't want to stay dead. Wildly imaginative, crazy, perfectly captures the feel of folk legends and fairy tales. Creepy, spooky, with inspired fantastic imagery.

Monster of the Opera (1964) seems like a typical "young lady in semi-transparent nightie running in terror" gothic horror film but turns out to be much odder. It's a vampire in a haunted theatre film. Or maybe it isn't. Bizarre but fascinating.

The Deadly Affair (1967), based on a John le Carré novel. James Mason is excellent as George Smiley. Has a drab depressing totally appropriate visual style. Effectively bleak, not bad but has major flaws and was predictably a box office flop.

Damiano Damiani's La strega in amore (The Witch, 1966), unconventional Italian gothic horror in a modern setting. A writer gets involved with a woman who may be a witch. Very decadent. It's also a noirish psychosexual melodrama. Great stuff.

The X from Outer Space (1967), a wild crazy goofy Japanese scifi movie with a giant chicken dinosaur monster from the stars. Who feeds on atomic energy. Silly delightful innocent fun.

Jane Fonda and Alain Delon shine in Rene Clement's superb Joy House (1964) which anticipates later erotic neo-noirs. Has a slightly off-kilter absurdist edge. Almost noir black comedy. A movie about game-playing and the movie itself is a game.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: La Jetée.

A 28 minute, black & white film consisting only - apart from one brief moment - of still photographs. A child witnesses an incident at Orly Airport and only comes to understand years later, with the aid of time travel, what it was that he saw. One of a very special, very haunting, kind.

(It's on YouTube, in good condition, and with subtitles.)

Jack Mahoney stars in Tarzan Goes to India (1962). He's an older wiser Tarzan who has to save a herd of elephants. This is the educated man, equally at home in the jungle or the civilised world, version of Tarzan. Beautifully shot. Enjoyable.
