It's a vampire in a haunted theatre film. Or maybe it isn't. d4doomeDamiano Damiani's La strega in amore (The Witch, 1966), unconventional Italian gothic horror in a modern setting. A writer gets involved with a woman who may be a witch. Very decadent. It's also a noirish psychosexual melodrama. This is the educated man, equally at home in the jungle or the civilised world, version of Tarzan. Beautifully shot. d4doomeThe Hound of Blackwood Castle (1968), one of the later colour German Rialto Edgar Wallace krimis, with a bit of a Hound of the Baskervilles vibe this time. A visual delight, with the gothic trappings laid on extra thick. d4doomeYou might expect Claude Chabrol’s Blue Panther to be a lighthearted 1965 eurospy romp but it isn't. Chabrol is trying to deconstruct the genre and play other similar games. If that appeals to you you'll love the film.
