Welcome to !

I hope this replacement won't be necessary but just in case here we are.

I think we can do a better job moderating content as a community of medical professionals.

Only 3 ground rules:
1. All medical professionals and curious onlookers are welcome.
2. Be kind and respectful: these are your colleagues.
3. No PHI or hate-speech. Debate is good, blatant misinformation is not.

Plus - as this shows - you get 500 characters & can edit “toots"

@nick I signed in to mastodon.lol server. But then I found this server, too. I m a science journalist and I write a lot on health issues. Do you think I should sign in to mastodon-med, too? Is that forbidden here(having multiple accounts on different servers) - would I be labeled "bot" if I do it? Sorry, still learning about Mastodon...

@zrnopameti it’s ok too but you really don’t need to. Because the servers are all federated you can see what’s going on at med-mastodon from another instance.

@nick Do you have a tip jar? I've heard this mentioned as a courtesy to the server host. You know--kind of like bringing a bottle of wine to a party 😏

@nick would be good to expand PHI. Took a bit of googling to find "personal? private health information".

@futuredocs @nick you can "delete and re-draft" which is the Mastodon version of Edit. it will lose any likes/boosts though, and i believe also loses any replies.

@futuredocs @nick one upside of being here!

@futuredocs yes you can with a few caveats.

It depends on which app you are using. In “tooot”(the free app with 3 O’s, not the paid app with 2 O’s) there is an option to edit.

In some others there is a “delete & repost” option

I expect this will get easier with Mastodon v4 btw.

@nick @futuredocs oooh didn't realize this. downloading now! Crazy how different features available depending on the app.

@DrBones @nick @GermHunterMD @futuredocs there’s a snarky comment here to be made about Androids

@DrSandman11 @nick @GermHunterMD @futuredocs Tusky is an android alternative that has worked for me. There are others.

@nick @futuredocs ahhhh this makes sense now

@nick Thank you for creating this forum.

@nick my wife was suggesting this would be a good idea. But I’ve already got an account of a different server. Can you change?

@nick Thanks for setting up this server. For non-US users, may I please suggest you spell out in the ground rules what "PHI" stands for? I am guessing it is "Protected/Personal Health Information", but in Australia, for example, we don't use that term (PHI would more likely stand for "private health insurance").

@nick I'm wondering if it will be possible to do the equivalent of live tweetorials here (Tootorials)? It's something that seemed to take off on Twitter in 2020, especially in the gastro community.

@nick I'd love to see a list of some of the more prominent #medtwitter folks who have migrated. It would be nice to have on a Google sheet--especially since a lot of us are on various servers here

@nick joined before you started this and now I regret not being on this (much more functional) server! :catjam:

@austinchiangmd @nick what happens when you change servers - is it like starting over or do you bring those you follow and vice versa?

@nick thanks for launching this @nick. I actually am hopeful to see enough migration here that this could become a better, safer, friendlier space than #MedTwitter. Looking forward to more of the #Medodon #MedMastodon revolution.

@tnicholsmd @nick
So how does the med-mastodon work? Do you (@nick) have a physical server that you volunteered to host from? Or did you launch and server space is provided by Mastodon? Is there someone moderating so blatant misinformation gets removed?

I like the idea of this being a haven for the best of med-twitter...I'm already more comfortable being less anonymous here because 90% of this server is made up of people I have interacted with!

@bcbiochemist @tnicholsmd my hope is that we can do a better job moderating ourselves instead of relying on an algorithm or non-medical people at :twitter: to adjudicate. Eventually we could/should have a bunch of volunteers moderating.

Not a physical server. A company rents us the server space (much much easier & more secure this way).

@nick @bcbiochemist yes, I agree and I love this idea. Looking forward to the journey, but I do think this is the future way forward.

@tnicholsmd @nick how does one switch over to med-mastodon and become verified? I’m verified everywhere else but here 🥲

@nick I appreciate this is a week old but

are there plans anytime to draw up a code of conduct - not binding as ground rules, but community expectations?

@hope_smolmedic yes.

There are three rules:
- no hate speech
- no blatant misinformation
- no PHI

Obviously we will need to flesh out specifics & decide if we need anything else. (What is PHI? are parody accounts ok? How do handle warnings & second chances? When to use content warnings? Etc)

Thus far I’ve tried to narrowly enforce the rules.

@tnicholsmd @nick how do I get here? I can’t even figure out how to follow the hashtag. I joined a local server because I had no idea what I was doing!!

@nick

What is the URI of the server instance? Or will you host it here with #MedMastodon?

@nick Thanks for setting this up. I will take a while to find my feet, but hoping this will provide an online location for us to continue to be a diverse medical community that discusses things respectfully. I have learned so much from my online communities and don’t won’t to lose that!

@charlot_summers @nick Feel the same - keen not to lose the benefits of online community gained on twitter, especially the discussion with people otherwise unable to meet F2F.

Hope no need to move from twitter, but can already see a few benefits - edit toots! 💪

@nick thanks Nick! Was trying to set something up this past weekend and couldn’t get the server settings right. Glad you’re organizing this!

@nick This is wonderful. Let's start over.

@nick ahhh! I found it!!! The new home of Med Twitter…. Wonder if we can address EPIC here… guess unlikely as… they weren’t on twitter either!!!

@nick thanks for launching this. Med Twitter was inclusive of anyone in the medical field. Is that the case for med-mastodon? I’ve never wanted to intrude on spaces that weren’t intended for me. Thanks!

@nick any idea how to move to the new server?

@HemeOnc @nick working on this, will update if I figure it out

@tnicholsmd @HemeOnc @nick I figured it out. It lets you take your followers (I only had 6), but you have to re-follow everyone you were following.

@Scullingmonkey @HemeOnc @nick seems you can interact regardless of which initial server you’ve joined 👇mstdn.social/@feditips/1092904

@nick I already set up on a different server but looking forward to seeing what come of this

@nick
Hey.
Why do some folks have a med-mastodon address and others don’t?
Can you change? How? And does it matter?
Cheers

@DrJohnAquino
You can have your account with any mastodon node (med-mastodon, mstdn-social, etc). You can even switch between you if you like. (They are all free btw).
From one you can follow people on any other one too.

@nick thx. I searched for med-mast but it didn’t show up

@DrJohnAquino @nick Hi Johnny, if you click on the hashtag in @nick OP, you should see in the top right of the browser version an option to follow the hashtag. I've circled the button, which shows I'm following, in this picture here. I'm using a WebApp extension from a Chrome derivative, probably similar for other browsers or webpages.
