"I'm a strong supporter of the decision of stopping of masks on our subway system, masks in protest, and masks in other areas where it's not health related." - NYC Mayor Adams
But you can get COVID everywhere. EVERYWHERE is health-related. A mask ban doesn't make sense.
@luckytran I feel sick from hearing about the idea
@luckytran We're really living in some strange times. Reading in one headline that #H5N1 is on its way, reading in the next that even the slightest mitigations against the spread of disease are being criminalised.
I still have my #WNBA team cloth masks from 2020. They're not much good against viruses, but I can still wear them to a peaceful protest against mask bans.
See....you know this, and i know this....and we all know this here, but...they don't, and they're the ones who get to decide.
@luckytran
The subway seems like such a particularly bad place to ban masks from.
New York City & State coming in hot as most anti-science, ableist, health bigoted, so-called progressive area in the country.
@hannu_ikonen @luckytran I'm so fckin mad. That is my home state. My elderly parents are still there
He says that as if people weren't wearing masks on the subway long before COVID
@luckytran wow these Republicans are out of control! /s
North Carolina R's - Let's do this horrible thing.
Americans - Hey that's horrible!
New York D's - No it's brilliant!
@Shebeencounter @RebelGeek99 @luckytran This is why people in safe seats should be reminded with aggressive primaries that the SEAT is safe in the party, but THEY are not!
@luckytran A "mask ban" doesn't make sense. What does is a "mask sentencing enhancement" for crime where if you commit a crime while wearing a mask you get punished more. Because not only is committing a crime bad, doing so in a way that can lead to people distrusting things like masks is also bad.
@luckytran You can't be a supporter of anti- anything, that's the opposite of support.
He's an opponent of masks but won't say so.
@luckytran They're banning masks in the NYC subway? Great way to get me to use taxis, I guess.
@mattblaze @luckytran Yeah… another good reason to never visit NYC again.
@scanner @mattblaze @luckytran Or even enter the USA entirely...
@mattblaze @luckytran the Governor is just floating the idea to shift the news cycle away from the congestion pricing fiasco. Legislature isn’t in session so no action could happen until January. And it would surely have medical and religious carve outs. Which just makes it pointless as a ban, and bad public health policy, pretext for harassment.
And I bet they raise your taxis too.
@luckytran something tells me people wearing face masks to protect themselves aren't going to get a friendly policeman asking to quickly take it off to see the face, they're going to get a cop demanding they take it off, period..
And people will then be unprotected from covid and other diseases.
@luckytran What an idiot!
I don’t believe health suddenly stops mattering on public transit. In fact, considering proximity to people in an enclosed space, I gotta say that’s the place to wear masks.
Unless of course, people with sniffles who are too considerate or people who get sick more frequently are not supposed to take public transit to their daily shifts - I take it the mayor will fly them by helicopter personally?
Doesn’t check out.
@astroPug @luckytran It's probably more a case that people who use public transport don't matter.
Yeah, sadly.
@luckytran @mattblaze A long time ago I used to commute from NJ to NYC via Path, and I have never caught a random cold or flu as often as I did during that time. If I knew then what I know now I would have worn a mask on pretty much every commute.
@luckytran Wow. Then take nearby NYC off my vacation list. Masks should always be appropriate for those who ARE sick and for those who want to PREVENT becoming sick.
@luckytran a populous metropolis banning sanitary masking in the middle of a pandemic to make it easier for face-recognition by the cops sounds like a plotline that got cut from a YA dystopian series for being too dark and too boring.
I'm sure the mayor and the governor will not be mentioning this episode when they are dealing with the fallout from the next fast spreading respiratory illness.
@luckytran I just don’t understand how he got elected
@luckytran “Wherever two or more of you are gathered there is Covid. “
@luckytran Wawawa…wait - there can be no super-heroes without masks!! More seriously - apart from the legitimate health concerns related to mask bans, whether compromised immune-systems increasing one’s risk of infection, or the compromised identities increasing the risk of being targeted by angry doxers and swatters and HR departments - risking one’s access to health-care and/or employment and/or life… One thing I haven’t seen discussed is how it will effect those who practice religions requiring veils, masks, shrouds, etc. If those are exceptions, someone needs to found a science-based religion that encourages mask wearing.
Is the mayor guaranteeing that those places are safe from airborne disease, and providing evidence?
@luckytran Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb... mask bans kill people
@luckytran facial recognition tech: hey gov, I need a favor
@luckytran
These fucken Republicans, ... oh wait.
@luckytran It's not really even a health issue, it's a free speech issue. People have the right to wear masks just like they have the right to wear hats or sunglasses or any other potentially concealing bit of clothing.
See, this is the right's hypocrisy at play, because everything I said is exactly what THEY were saying back when they were protesting the lockdowns. Their fundamental dishonesty is sad, because that's one thing they were right about back then, but they backtrack on their own principles just to harm the left.
@luckytran people who advocate for #MaskBans instead of #MaskMandates are at best #facist if not #democidal & #eugenicist assholes!
Any #MaskBan should be called out as the attack on #marginalized people like #immunocompromized folks that it is and be publicly opposed by active non-compliance...
@luckytran tell me ur a cop without telling me ur a cop
@luckytran Eric Adams is ignorant 0and should never have been allowed near elected office
@luckytran imagine rawdogging subway air
@luckytran America is quickly moving away from 'the land of the free' eh.
@luckytran This whole debacle sounds like a massive free speech violation, not to mention to sheer irresponsibility of it.
@luckytran they should ban tinted windows on limousines so we can see the real criminals hiding in them.
@luckytran It's infuriating that, even taking them at their word, they hear that people are scared for their lives on their subways and the only action they'll even remotely consider taking is to ban people from wearing life-saving medical equipment. Not to protect their civilians, but to make the ones who aren't in any danger FEEL better.
Oh, and does that mean that doctors and nurses and others *in* health care centers, such as doctor's offices and hospitals, *will* now be routinely wearing masks?!?!?
.
[Of course not. We know this is not about health. Far from it.]
@luckytran SOMETIMES BEING INTELLIGENT can get into the way of relating information... ONE SHOULD still wear masks if need be with COVID in CLOSE places to others ...CRIMINALS WILL ALWAYS BE AN ISSUE ...
@luckytran could he be anymore of a sell out
@luckytran
Wait, what? Wearing a mask on the subway is not health-related?
Whatever he's smoking, I do NOT want it.
@luckytran The contrast from a few years ago when people would be attacked for 'not' wearing a mask or ejected from stores for 'not' wearing a mask or reported to the police, to now, and this thought of banning them is unreal. The irony of that cough at the end too! Maybe he'll be banned from using his fist to cover his mouth when he coughs next time, you know cuz he might be KKK or about to commit a crime if he did. What a strange world we live in... Or am I missing something?
