Businesses like In-N-Out Burger are banning staff from wearing masks (unless they provide a medical note)
You can send In-N-Out Burger a comment about their discriminatory policy banning masks here: https://www.in-n-out.com/contact
Ok here's the link to the email confirming In-N-Out is planning to ban staff from wearing masks in in Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Utah (if they don't have a medical note). The policy will be effective in Aug 14, 2023.

@luckytran Painfully backwards. I can't even comprehend the logic behind a decision like this.
@luckytran Unfortunately unsurprising. In-n-Out also opposed vaccines:
So the masks that keep people from coughing or sneezing during food prep are banned...so we can see the employees smile as they work
Of course that makes perfect sense. I know what I care about when I eat is not that my food is prepared safely, but that I get to see employees smile as I eat...
F***ing lunacy
@luckytran is there a source for this?
@luckytran weren't they also the ones that tried to prevent their employees from *washing their hands* during the pandemic?
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com Sadly, this appears to be a systemic pattern with them: https://www.politico.com/states/california/story/2021/10/21/californias-in-n-out-sparks-latest-pandemic-culture-war-1391983
@luckytran I was going to make a joke about them not knowing what "unmatched health and safety standards" means but onn second thought I think they got it right, just not the way they wanted.
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com
This shouldn't surprise anyone. In-n-Out is even more religious than Chick-fil-A. It was founded by a Christian who believed that he needed to put Bible verses on packaging to show the business was guided by Christian values. Of course that means they're anti-vaxx, pro-covid, and support politicians who hate LGBT+ people.
@o76923 I like the term "Christists" for these religious radiacals. @luckytran
Even if I put on my “most selfish consumer” hat, I still would prefer having less saliva in my food to a customer service smile.
@luckytran @daniel Extra brutal when I'm sure these states don't have paid sick leave, and these guys probably have shitty health insurance, so workers can't afford the time to go and see a doctor never mind pay for it.
@luckytran I'm sure the "don't force me to wear a mask" folks are up in arms about this affront to personal liberty
@luckytran
Never understood why In &Out is a big thing. Burgers are mediocre at best. Not worth waiting in line.
@luckytran i bet i can get a note from my doctor that covid still exists
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com that is absolutely insane... someone get these employees a union
@luckytran This is exactly how Publix doesn't allow you to have water with you without a doctor's note. When it's busy, it's difficult to have time to get to the water fountain.
@kimlockhartga @luckytran Publix bans water (except from their filthy water fountains)? This must be directed at employees, because I can't see them pulling that shit with customers - in Florida, no less.
There's a market here for "water notes." Parasitic Sarasota County chiropractor Dan Busch can get back to note-writing (???) now that mask-exemptions are no longer in demand. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/09/02/florida-chiropractor-mask-mandate-exemption/)
@spooge @luckytran Yeah, I meant just employees, sorry. Though it's still mean.
@luckytran So glad I've never given their overrated business the time of day.
@luckytran We don't have them here but if they did I’d boycott.
@luckytran land of the free(dom to do what you're told)!

People from California kept telling me how awesome In-N-Out burgers are. I don't see them being better than Wendy's.
@luckytran my reply:
Hi there, we are about to go on our 2 week road trip to San Diego Comic Con. We usually look forward to In-N-Out on the road to California from Seattle. In accordance with the ADA guidelines, you cannot ask for the nature of someone's disability in order to require them to prove the need for accomodations such as masks. This goes for customers and employees. If your employees are unable to wear a mask to their own comfort level without questions asked and demand a requirement of a doctor's note (are you paying for their doctor's visit? Do you offer comprehensive health insurance?), I will not be stopping by your locations. Thank you for your time and please let me know once you have changed your policy for the protection of your employees and customers who interact with them who also have limitations and disabilities.
@NerdRage42 @luckytran This no mask policy seems pathetic - pandering to right-wing nutjobs, fear of being labeled 'woke' - whatever.
But, "ADA guidelines" are likely inapplicable. If you're going to the trouble to send a sanctmoniously pompous note to register your disapproval, you might consider skipping the incorrect reference to the US ADA Accessibility Standards
@spooge @luckytran ah yes. It is I who is pompous. Not the employer who says "we can't possibly make our customers have to look at a masked face." Am I not a customer also?
Carry on.
@NerdRage42 @luckytran But you're not a customer. You were going to be in San Diego for what? A week. Two weeks going and coming? A couple of visits, maybe. Big customer.
And that would be, "It is I that AM pompous?" Because if, "you IS pompous," that might sound racist, or just incorrect.
And I didn't write that you were pompous. I wrote that your note took a pompous (and sanctimonious) tone. Or something like that. I've just had that word on my mind, because of Ron and all.
@luckytran I’m glad California locations don’t seem to be involved in this. I still wear an N95 when indoors in public buildings. I haven’t had a respiratory illness since the pandemic began and I’d like to keep it that way.
@luckytran The reason California isn't on that list is that it's illegal to require people not to wear a mask here.
I really hope we keep that law on the books. It protects us from predatory employers like In-N-Out.
@luckytran "medical, religious, and other protected reasons" for eating somewhere else have just gone into effect for my household!
@luckytran Welp. There’s another business going on my “do not patronize” list.
@luckytran ffs, it's fucking fast food. I don't care if someone is wearing a mask when I order my poor choice gut bombs.
Guess we aren't stopping there on our road trip the next 2 weeks.
Probably better for my waistline anyway.
@luckytran so dissapointed. am one of those nooyawkahs that first thing i do when i go to cali is to find their closest joint.
@luckytran In-N-Out also prints bible verses on some of their product packaging and use public streets like their private drive-thrus, clogging traffic.
@shacker @luckytran
They say in their that they want customers to be able to see the workers' faces. It's a stupid reason, and it's probably also related to a general desire to move past the pandemic- as if ignoring it will make it go away. Also interesting to note the policy doesn't apply in California, which I think has a law protecting workers' right to wear a mask if they want to.
@VATVSLPR @luckytran wow, so it really is a superficial as it sounds. Kind of pathetic if you ask me. People who feel the need to wear a mask should wear a mask with no judgment or restrictions, it’s pretty simple.
@luckytran Thanks for making that so easy, I’ve had a desire to express my opinion to them for a while. My comment follows:
I was sorry to learn of your response to mask use during the height of the pandemic. I thought you were the best burger option around and now I won’t be able to enjoy them. Your attitude towards the healthcare providers that were struggling to keep the public safe has caused me to boycott you, just as I have had to boycott McDonalds since January 1993 when they jerked around the camp for kids that were invited to a presidential inauguration. Thinking you know better than public health officials and causing them a bigger burden during a crisis is despicable, next time you have a choice to make, I hope you have it come from a more humble place.
@luckytran Their customer service number, for those inclined to call: 1-800-786-1000.
"I also wonder what other health and safety policies and laws your firm is disregarding"
@luckytran Comment sent. Thank you for providing a link to make it easier to let In-N-Out Burger know how bad their policy is.
@luckytran Thanks, done.
Interesting that this doesn't apply here in California, where In n Out originated and has their HQ.
And interesting that they do this and print citations to the Bible on their packaging and don't see a contradiction.
@luckytran Done:
"I am appalled to hear you are banning workers from wearing masks and threatening them with disciplinary action for attempting to keep themselves and your customers safe from airborne disease. Knowing this, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I neither want to reward your bad behavior with my business nor put my and my family's health at risk visiting an establishment committed to harming public health for the sake of scoring points with anti-mask nutjobs."
@luckytran wait wtf banning them?! this makes no sense…
@luckytran So stupid and evil.
@luckytran we're going to undermine doctor patient confidentiality here but, BUT, your medical information that we're digging into for no identifiable reason will be treated with strict confidentiality of the sort where like 7 managers and supervisors will be told about it, and probably won't gossip about it, we hope, maybe.
yay for ableist medical discrimination at work! everyone please unionize if you can :(
@luckytran personally would like all my food staff to wear masks at all times. Seems generally more sanitary
@luckytran Do better!
@luckytran I've been expecting this for a while. Next you'll see banks and other businesses banning customers with masks
@luckytran I would ignore this so hard.
What would they do… fire me?
First they would have to hire you..... if they would
@luckytran This makes me so angry. Any employer banning masks doesn't deserve to have ANY staff... in part because that policy is incredibly stupid from a business perspective, since when staff mask they are far less likely to get sick (thus are more likely to be present and perform better).
I almost wish we had In-N-Out here so I could convince everyone to boycott it for being discriminatory/pro-disease/moronic.
I'm sure American human rights legislation is really weak compared to its Canadian equivalent, but shouldn't there be some way for In-N-Out employees to push back against that on human rights grounds?
Honestly, I hope any COVID-conscious/pro-mask In-N-Out employees who can afford to quit / find a new job do... that'll send a powerful message on behalf of everyone who can't afford to, and possibly help convince them to reverse the policy.
