Dr. Lucky Tran :verified:

Just attended a city hearing about responding to wildfire smoke.

Excuses they gave:
"We had no warning"
"It's up to individuals"
"Only the vulnerable should be concerned"
"There's no long term health effects"

They are minimizing the same way they minimized .

@luckytran In order for most Governments to embrace Climate Change, they must admit they knew about the problem since at least the early 1970s and did NOTHING to try to stop it, and THAT they will not do.

@luckytran

I spoke about o some dohmh folks about that myself.

NYC only has access to some of the best climate and weather research institutions in the world — many of them regularly consult for nyc. Many advise nyc for free. They’ve even got some climate unit —

No one expected AQI — everyone looking expected AQI of 150+ though, and that should’ve been enough.

@luckytran "It's up to individuals"???

I know, I know, but sheesh. Way to libertarian.

@luckytran Why did they apply to this "official" position, if it's to do nothing?

@luckytran
"We had no warning". That's great. The IPCC reports are warning enough of what they should be expecting. It clearly outlines increased risk of wildfires. Oh well ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

@luckytran having experienced both Covid and wildfire smoke, I can tell you this is not shit you wanna fuck around with at all!!

@luckytran I swear, those are like common refrains for more than just climate change and COVID 😠

@luckytran

We've had at least half a century of warning that this shit was coming.

But whatever.

@luckytran
In the absence of coordinated action, a quick & dirty partial solution is to buy a 20" box fan and tape a 20" furnace filter to the back. It's not perfect, but it's more effective than you'd think. Even a cheap filter makes a difference.
