I am pasting in a post here from Jay Varma, who used to be with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. I agree with every word he writes.
"I was shocked today to learn that New York City will end its requirement that City employees be vaccinated against #COVID19. The City's own data, paid for by its dollars and analyzed by its staff, are abundantly clear: Vaccinating adults averts infections, hospitalizations, and deaths (https://lnkd.in/eiKt7K95). " 1/
"Moreover, in 2021, the City's mandates and outreach saved >$50 billion dollars, with the Health Department concluding that "every $1 invested in vaccination yielded estimated savings of $10.19 (95% CrI, $9.39-$10.87) in direct and indirect costs of health outcomes that would have been incurred without vaccination." (https://lnkd.in/eiajG6xq)." 2/
"After the City removes its mandate, private sector employers and possibly higher education institutions will likely do the same. Every day, new people enter the workforce, as teenagers become working adults." 3/
"Given the relatively low rate of vaccination among children, this means that the percentage of the adult NYC population vaccinated will decrease over time, and there will be no mechanism (e.g., workforce mandates) to "catch them up," as their risk of severe illness and death rises with each year they age and as new variants emerge. " 4/
"While prior infection also averts infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, multiple studies have shown that vaccination is safest and adds protection on top of virus-induced immunity.
At a purely economic level, employers need to recognize that the more unvaccinated employees you have, the more days employees will miss work and the greater your health insurance expenses will be." end/
@gregggonsalves Also the higher the likelihood of having employees out on temporary or permanent disability from #PASC
@gregggonsalves
There is no way we can expect (most) essential workers to get vaccinated or stay home if sick. These people cannot afford it. So Biden’s decision to end the COVID emergency and NYC’s end of vax requirements are only going to lead to more COVID and illness.
@gregggonsalves
Biden is stuck with anti-vax GOPhers and a Congress that will not tackle pandemics or big money pharma. New York’s got Eric and Kathy.
People like me, and so many in worse circumstances, will never be able to return to society. It makes me sad and frustrated.
Isnt vaccine free?
@nastynana16
It probably will still be free for Medicare patients. Not for the uninsured. And who knows about private health insurance.

For reference:
New York City Ends Vaccine Mandate for City Workers

I don't live in #NYC but it seems to me that Adams is a bad mayor. And not the *brightest bulb*. His stated rationale: we've successfully vaccinated a lot of people with an effective vaccine that has prevented death and morbidity, so let's stop. ????
@gregggonsalves
From that nyt article:
"Dr. Denis Nash, an epidemiologist at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health, said the mandate’s focus on making sure workers had their initial vaccine doses had been outdated for some time now, and that instead of retreating, the city should be doubling down on a policy to raise the #bivalent booster coverage to save lives."
That makes sense. Not the BS that Adams is spewing.
@steve_zeke It's just pandering to his right flank.
@gregggonsalves the anti-vaxxers are creating an avalanche of lawsuits.
@JosephSmith2510 @gregggonsalves The anti-vaxxers need to be sued by everyone affected by their actions. Starting with those who are encouraging them to make false claims about the vaccine.
@gregggonsalves Forget about the danger; think of the fun!
