One province in our country, Batangas, reports 1000+ cases of Hand, foot and mouth disease (#HFMD) in children. I think this is an ongoing outbreak since October. Another province, Albay, also reported hundreds of cases.
I don't think this is a normal occurrence at all..
Are we going to see eventual surges of other infectious diseases because of the Covid19 pandemic?
@eeyam it's probably unrelated.
@uncomfyhalomacro yes. Probably also related if the immune deficiency caused by covid is taken into account. Someone should look into it
@eeyam oh that. i read some studies that covid causes immunity fatigue, where your immune system is basically suppressed due to exhaustion.
@uncomfyhalomacro Yes there are various studies already on covid effects on immune cells specifically T cells and B cells. The severe RSV wave in other countries seem to suggest this too
@eeyam it's probably a good idea to research that phenomenon in a #philippines setting. this might help us strategize on what to do with future diseases as similar as #covid19. are there plans in your work to conduct such studies or its not of interest as of the moment? i feel like it's crucial though since we might be pointing at the wrong thing e.g. AIDs, when it's actually COVID19
@uncomfyhalomacro Yes this is a good research question. But I unfortunately can’t do it because of work. It would be interesting tho to see our disease trends in the coming days, month and years
