A 15-year old died last week in an crash in California. So heartbreaking... tinyurl.com/yc77d3bw

We don't know many of the details in this case, but the rising incidence of e-bike injuries and fatalities calls for a closer look at how these are regulated. More⬇️ @FortuneMagazine tinyurl.com/48nmd2wt

@cbarbermd I don't understand your thinking as you said we don't know many of the details in this case, but at the same time you were quick to implicitly blame the victim by suggesting bike regulations should be reviewed.

Shouldn't we also be looking at the road, driver behavior, and many other factors that might have contributed to this fatality?

Hi Agua, As I mentioned. I have no idea what happened here. Did the driver hit the biker in the bike lane? Did the e-bike accidentally cut in front of the van or try to zoom past it as I describe happened to Meg in my article? Have no earthly idea, but I did write this piece before this fatality ever happened. And there are many others, even pedestrians who have been killed/injured by e-bikes. Have a look at the piece—I do think we should have mandated helmets & more 1/2

@ageusantiago regulation/ education around these motorized bikes, esp for younger kids. I’m not at all trying to blame this biker— it’s heartbreaking.

@cbarbermd We agree this incident is heartbreaking, but I'm afraid that's where our agreement ends.

I'm sorry but you did come across as victim blaming in your comment whether you meant it or not.

In regards to your article, I do understand where you're coming from as physician, but I think your views are very North American biased (despite the European citations) and outdated. Most importantly, you only focus at one one thing and miserably fails to look at whole picture.

I hope someday you write about something much more fatal such as car speeds and regulations.
