I thought this male summer tanager had come for the jelly and I was worried because there were a lot of yellow jackets around the jelly dish. I needn't have worried--it caught a yellow jacket out of the air and ate it. In other news, the yellow throated warbler (who I have heard all summer, but not seen) also returned; it is molting and the feeders offer an easy meal.

@carpingdiem wow! I didn't know birds ate yellowjackets! Great photos!!

@carpingdiem I've seen Summer Tanagers catching honeybees as they exited my Nature Center beehive.

#TIL Birds molt!! Never really thought about it - I knew dogs, moose and other furry creatures shed winter pelts in spring, in a general sense. I guess I never thought that birds or feathered animals did, too - just migrate to warmer climates.

Apparently it usually happens to birds late in the summer, and typically starts in the middle of their bodies and works is way outward (generally). Most even do it once a year! (The small ones at least)
