@aetiology why does one go into three different emergency departments when sick?
@Mela hard to say. Sent home, felt worse? Needed equipment (like xray) not present in one, so sent to another?
I had that same question. i suspect probably got worse. i think equipment would be avail in each of those ERs. Diagnosis likely wasn’t made til 3rd visit. Child was taken to two major shopping centers on same days as first two ER visits. maybe pharmacies, supplies there. really tempting to Monday morning quarterback, but I think docs are just going to have to bump this higher on their differentials which is going to be hard for something most haven’t seen. sadly.
@doxy_cycling I still find this ER hopping baffling. Why not go to the same ER as before, stating "It got worse" ... or why go to the ER at all as long as the kid doesn't drip blood all over the floor. Why not see a GP?
In Germany you'd go to the children's doctor. A growing number of Children's doctors practices have two waiting rooms. One just for patients with unclear symptoms that could possibly be caused by infections. To prevent infecting every damn child in the waiting area with Measles and the likes and their parents, too.
And the Children's doctor usually has the medical history of the child at hand.
But three ERs and start the diagnosis from scratch three times?
@doxy_cycling The workings of the US medical care system are just beyond me. @aetiology
@Mela @doxy_cycling if only it was this easy. Other ERs could have been too busy if they went back. Could be one was out of network. So many possibilities is hard to know what may have happened. Personally it often takes me 2-3 days to get in with kids' ped even for urgent-ish issues so we generally do urgent care.
@aetiology This sound messed up. Big time. @doxy_cycling
@aetiology And by 'messed up'
I mean inefficient, costing everybody time, need to drive longer distances to get medical care and using a resource that wasn't meant to deal with run-of-the-mill ailments, but with emergencies for ... well run-of-the-mill ailments @doxy_cycling
@aetiology Also ... a health hazard when highly transmittable pathogens go into the mix. @doxy_cycling
@Mela @doxy_cycling yep. It is messed up and inefficient and a disaster. 'Murica!
