I came out of #retirement as a general #pediatrician 2 weeks ago on a part-time basis to help my former partners deal with the overwhelming influx of sick kids.
In my 30 years of practice I have never seen it so bad this early in the #respiratory season. Lots of #influenza, #RSV, #COVID being spread around.
@Mitdoc Thank You Doc.
@Mitdoc I have a 7yo. He's in a Canadian school, but let's assume the differences with the US and Covid are minimal.
Since September he's brought home now NINE viral infections the entire family caught. And I'm even wearing an n95 around. All of us are vaxed and boosted. Plus flu vax.
I've never had an autumn cold/flu season like this in memory.
Anyway. Thanks foe risking your life to take care of our kids. Be safe out there.
@Mitdoc I can’t believe a lot of people died for refusing to get the Covid vaccine. It’s mind boggling
@mrstevebarajas @Mitdoc Especially when one political party needs their votes but pushed an anti-science agenda.
@JackieWolf @Mitdoc I think critical thinking died a long time ago with a lot of people.
@Mitdoc
Thank you, to you and all the other heroic folk that do the essential work happening inside hospitals and clinics all around the world.
@Mitdoc where are you?
@prazza1 In Virginia, USA.
@Mitdoc Thank you for helping!
@Mitdoc Is it possible this is a "bounce back" effect, post-lockdown?
@robpomeroy @Mitdoc Not really, given that we’re seeing similar dynamics in a lot of very different places, and cases were high (if not this high) last winter.
@Mitdoc Sadly the ones who need this information the most are virulently opposed to actually following it (masks do nothing / make it impossible to breath, the vaccines cause autism / enable Bill Gates to track you, et cetera…)
@Mitdoc 15 years ago, I suggested nursing as a degree path for my daughter. I had already read the NIH report on the impact climate change will have on the spread of disease. Although she's doing well in her profession, I worry about what the permafrost thaw will re-introduce to the world (I'm a soil scientist), and whether we have the defenses needed to fight against these ancient microbes. I could kick myself now for that suggestion.
@Mitdoc welcome Mark! Thank you for all you are doing for the kids, family & community.
@Mitdoc Thank you for your work.
@Mitdoc what a compassionate thing to do for your former patients and colleagues.
@Mitdoc
Thank you so much. My retired Psychiatrist hubby has been volunteering with local groups & teens dealing with the social & emotional fallout of the past 3 yrs.
Our 6 grands have all had COVID & youngest 2 RSV.
They have been vaxxed & got flu shots which thankfully mitigated symptoms
Yes!
#WearAMask
@SueInRockville Give your husband my thanks for his assistance during these times.
@Mitdoc
You are so right, Good Doctor Patterson. It is horrible, with people deciding they just don't want to do it anymore and so turn their backs either out of frustration OR that insane call of "But my rights!" What it is is death by complacency. Never thought I'd see this up close and personal in my life.
People be aware for yourself and others and #GetVaccinated #WearAMask and while you're at it, #TurnOffFox the disinformation channel. And mega blessings on you @Mitdoc
@Mitdoc Wow, thank you for your service. We’re all fully vaxed against Covid and the flu and are staying away from crowded places as much as possible to avoid becoming a statistic.
@Mitdoc ya. I hear you.
It's very bad here in Idaho too.
@Mitdoc same here. Our local children’s hospital is almost at capacity. Whoever gets sick is suffering longer and more severe. Pretty alarming really. Great you help out, because this requires all hands on deck!
@Mitdoc Thank you so much. I hope the facility where you practice has a mask mandate.
@ColoradoCarol Yes, they do have a mandate, from age 2 and up. Kids are often more compliant than their parents.
@Mitdoc @ColoradoCarol absolutely. Kids can be way more sensible.
@Mitdoc literally just had the most frustrating conversation with my brother where i said "i wish people would wear a mask when they were sick even with a mild cold, so asthmatics like myself wouldn't get bronchitis multiple times a year. I get it after every cold." He goes "You do not get it after every cold." Was very convinced i was wrong about that. And then went on about immunity debt. I love him but damn
@Mitdoc it is awful.
Thanks for coming back and helping out!
@Mitdoc
Thank you
@Mitdoc first, thanks for helping out- glad to know there are people like yourself. Second, have you any idea of why there are so many cases?
@ttimes I don't really know. Lots of theories from waning societal immunity due to reduced exposures for the 'isolation' years, to an effect of COVID infection on the immune system leading to increased vulnerability. All I know is that healthcare systems everywhere are being overwhelmed. It is important for each of us to do our part to mitigate the spread of illness.
@Mitdoc Thank you for lending a helping hand. Experience like yours is valued, and extra pair of hands and brain is so useful.
@Mitdoc it’s madness. Flu is totally out of control this season, too.
@Mitdoc
Thank you
@Mitdoc we can't seem to catch a break in Geriatrics either.....
@Mitdoc Sadly under-5's can't get covid vaccines in Europe :-(
@Mitdoc i wish i could have done that. had the WPHP not ruined my career i'd have gone to NYC for covid, i'd have gone to ukraine for border help, i'd have gone to navaho nation to help, i'd be going wherever. i'm glad you have the opportunity to help.
@Mitdoc this year my nephew started school, and because of all the illness he got from there has spent most of Christmas in bed (I only saw him for about 30 seconds), my sister and brother in law are also unwell. Thankfully not Covid nor 'flu but one of the other nasties going around and I was also unwell for much of whole last week, and I have had all the jabs + boosters (I work in health/social care myself as an IT manager/engineer and am on 24/7 call a lot of the time)
@Mitdoc thank you so much for your dedication.
