Stanford president’s research under investigation for scientific misconduct, University admits ‘mistakes’
#ImageForensics
* Paper by University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne is now under investigation
* Theo Baker writes at The Stanford Daily.
Bik, though, disagreed with the university’s assertion that the “mistakes” do not impact the scientific integrity of the papers. “I do not agree with [the] statement that these issues have no bearing on the data or the results"

@ElisabethBik Wow. This one is incredible
@ElisabethBik wow this one is an insidious one. If he made the gel, then yes, this is nefarious. If he did not, did we have software powerful enough to detect this kind of thing in 2000?
@docmoschos There was no such software back in 2000 - photoshop had barely become mainstream back then. In this case, it looks like digital alteration was used to either cover up lanes that were not relevant, or to make very narrowly cropped images visually more pleasing. It did not fabricate or falsify results, at least not visibly.
@ElisabethBik It boggles the mind that this keeps happening, keeps getting found out, and people still keep acting completely surprised. It's like trying to shoplift a 20 pound turkey poorly hidden under your sweater and acting absolutely confused when caught out.
@arclight
"Wut? Oh that. Well, the turkey just happen to fall out of the sky into my sweater so I figured I could keep it".
