Another fun one. Toxicologist often deal with adverse effects of using substances inappropriately.
This is a bottle taken from a patient I was consulted on that suffered a very serious effect.
What is the active ingredient in this substance, how is it used, and what are potential adverse effects from chronic use?
@EMPoisonPharmD Oooh this is a good one! Okay, so I've heard of people drinking nail polish remover for the alcohol content but I'm not sure if that's the acetone or acetone-free formula (and I don't think I've known anyone personally to use it like that). The isobutyl nitrite stands out to me. Would people inhaling it be using it like poppers?? For the vasodilation. Adverse effects: liver or kidney failure? Low BP if used like poppers.
@CaitlinMolina314 Bingo! Poppers come in all shapes and sizes. Low BP vrom dilation and many other issues that arise from odixant properties and drinking, see my response to @Tnicholsmd !
@EMPoisonPharmD I believe acetonitrile gets metabolized into hydrogen cyanide but don’t know if that happens also with chronic ingestion
