TWO-THIRDS had a bystander nearby, but in most cases, no naloxone (Narcan) was administered. Often bystander (eg, parent) was in another room.
We must do better getting naloxone to youth, families, schools.
@DrScottHadland we need to normalize having it the home and car. I also think all opioid prescriptions should come with naloxone as well.
@DrScottHadland I’m going to add on to this: fentanyl is widespread. Many of the young people dying from fentanyl poisoning are not addicts, they are first-time users who are experimenting with drugs, not realizing what they are getting is counterfeit. Most of the time they are buying pills via Snapchat or other social media.
TALK WITH THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE.
Test strips can help, but they only tell you about the pill or section you tested. Have & train in Narcan
If you like to party with drugs, know that fentanyl is widespread. If it comes in pills or powder, there can be fentanyl in the mix—it takes very little to overdose. Educate yourself & your friends in how to recognize an overdose. Keep Narcan on hand and learn when & how to use it. Narcan will only work on opioids & can’t help with other kinds of overdoses, but it also can’t cause harm, so don’t hesitate
